Nearly half (45%) of all people in the UK find Christmas a stressful time of year according to a recent YouGov survey

This added pressure of the festive period can be detrimental to someone struggling with addiction.

The prospect of spending Christmas away from families and friends can be a daunting prospect, but if you’re facing addiction, staying in a residential rehabilitation clinic could be what you need to begin your recovery journey.

This will be our fifth Christmas at Delamere, and guests and colleagues alike have remarked that their time here over the festive period was one of the best Christmases they’ve ever had.

Being in a safe, calm environment with no expectations or pressure can remove you from active addiction, provide some relief and help you acquire the tools you’ll need to stay well, moving forward.

Here’s what to expect if you come to Delamere this year:

Spending Christmas Day at rehab

What do you imagine Christmas Day would be like at rehab

At Delamere, our guests will be able to sit down for Christmas dinner, give each other gifts and open stockings on Christmas morning.

We aim to make Christmas as joyful, inclusive and memorable as possible for those staying with us over the period.

For anyone who does not want to participate in Christmas activities, there will be safe and calm spaces available to take time away from it.

When I was in active addiction, Christmas was one of the hardest times. The prospect of being left without a substance because the dealers went quiet over the period would lead to my binging more on alcohol, which would make me not only unwell. but bring about consequences that impacted all around me.

Many people in active addiction miss out on the little things that we all love about Christmas.

That is why at Delamere, we are a safe space for Christmas celebrations so that guests can begin their life beyond addiction.

Should you be at rehab over Christmas?

Asking yourself the question ‘should I be at rehab for Christmas?’ can be difficult, to face up to your reality and accept help.

Aside from the festivities, Christmas is just another day and there are no days off in addiction recovery.

Whilst spending time away from your family is difficult, spending this time in residential rehabilitation is an investment into future Christmases.

If you feel the ghost of Christmas past looming as we look forward to next week, there is a safe space to reflect and move forward at Delamere.

AfterCar-olling this Christmas

Nearly one in five (17%) people feel lonely over Christmastime, according to findings by Statista.

That’s why, this year, on December 29th, we’re inviting our alumni to join us for a carol service, mince pies and hot chocolate.

Christmas should be a time of connection, to meet new people and rekindle old relationships.

Our AfterCar-ol service will be led by the local church choir, Condate, and we will be donating to the Cheshire Food Hub.

Join us in giving back to the community this Christmas by donating to their Just Giving page, here.

The Delamere Approach

At Delamere we have an individualised holistic approach to addiction treatment and recovery.

The Stop, Start, Grow, Bloom model helps guests to pinpoint the causes of their addiction, and provides the toolbox to overcome it.

In the Stop phase, Delamere offers clinical detox with a 24/7 medical team to ensure safe and effective withdrawal.

The Start and Grow phases introduce guests to a range of holistic therapies including 1-1 and group therapy, breathwork, reiki, yoga and equine therapy.

Bloom is Delamere’s aftercare model, providing weekly check-ins for the first three months of life beyond addiction.
