Measuring outcomes has always proved to be a difficult process in the field of addiction recovery. At Barney we are determined to help understand how this can be improved. We believe that this starts with establishing what we measure.

Developing our understanding of recovery

As our understanding of recovery develops, so too does our definition of a successful recovery. For a long time now, the dominant metric in addiction treatment has been “clean days”. Abstinence or a reduction in use remains critically important and will always be a key indicator of safety and stability. But it does not tell the full story. Recovery is much more than a single outcome; it is an everchanging process that develops over all areas of an individual’s life. Emotionally, psychologically, physiologically, socially, behaviourally, spiritually… recovery often involves a change or “rebirth” on multiple fronts.

Measuring recovery outcomes

This is why Barney is built to measure more than just sobriety rates and relapse rates. Alongside abstinence, we track the many different aspects of recovery, as well as encourage individuals to reflect on life’s many facets such as connection, work, mental and physical wellbeing, and much more. Additionally, when relapse sadly does occur, Barney is designed to gently encourage users to dissect and reflect on the potential triggers and behaviours that lead to the incident. This in turn provides another key measurable data point with significant potential to improve long term outcomes.

Delamere’s commitment to life beyond rehabilitation

Barney’s approach aligns strongly with the way Delamere operates clinically. Delamere has long recognised that successful treatment does not end at discharge. Long term outcomes depend on continued engagement, reflection, and support. Their model acknowledges complexity and understands that everyone’s journey is different rather than oversimplifying recovery into a single metric such as abstinence.

What makes Delamere such a strong partner is their willingness to be forward thinking regarding outcomes. They understand that meaningful data is about insight that allows them to refine recovery pathways, as well as understand how to support individuals long term. Such insights also give the individuals themselves, the greatest possible knowledge and awareness of their own patterns, strengths, or potential warning signs.

Delamere have paved the way as the first rehab in the industry to embark on a structured outcomes-tracking mission through their KTP programme, and our technology will help support and strengthen that process.

By working together, Barney and Delamere are helping shift the conversation away from a narrow definition of recovery and towards a more complete understanding of life after addiction.

We are proud to partner with organisations like Delamere who recognise abstinence and reduced use as recovery’s key foundation, but who are willing to evolve how outcomes are understood and who are willing to measure what really matters.
