One-to-one counselling, often referred to as psychotherapy, involves talking to a trained therapist about your problems. It’s an important part of the growth and healing process for many people who need help with alcohol addiction, drug addiction, prescription drug addiction and other addictive behaviours that negatively impact everyday life.
When you first arrive at Delamere you will be assigned a focal therapist who will listen to your story and try to identify the cause of the addictive behaviour with you. Our highly qualified holistic therapists have expertise in different areas and will be chosen for you based on your personal needs and treatment goals.
During one-to-one therapy, they will learn more about your condition, moods, feelings and behaviours to understand why addiction has become part of your life. Each guest receives a minimum of two formal sessions with their focal therapist and two one-to-one sessions with their recovery mentor every week.

The act of simply removing a substance or undesired behaviour from your life isn’t enough to support long-term recovery from active addiction. Our one-to-one holistic therapists will help you to pinpoint the past trauma, unhealthy relationships or other stresses that play a role in your addiction. Once you understand the context of your own struggles, we can begin to develop tools and create conditions that will help you shape a better future.
At Delamere, we recognise that each guest has a unique story. During one-to-one sessions with your therapist you will be able to freely share your thoughts and experiences so that they can create a truly individualised treatment plan for you. This might mean teaching you how to deal with emotions, developing future coping strategies or giving you the skills to make small, positive changes to your life. Whatever your addiction, you can expect confidential, compassionate support from people who care.
One-to-one therapy at Delamere usually starts with getting to know you and your experience of addiction. Your personal holistic therapist will ask a series of questions to determine when your addictive behaviour started, what role it plays in your life and if you are ready to make some difficult changes. If you are committed to stopping an undesired behaviour, your therapist will work with you to identify triggers and tricky situations.
We often find that addiction is rooted in a past traumatic experience. This might be something that has happened to you recently or in earlier life. When this is the case, the first stage of your one-to-one therapy sessions we will help you to strengthen your coping strategies, understand how trauma affects the nervous system and prepare for focused trauma therapy.
In stage two, you will have access to a range of evidence-based therapies to help heal from past trauma. This might include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). During stage three of trauma-focused therapy we will focus on post-traumatic growth and develop coping mechanisms for you to put into practice when you return home.
We will look at all aspects of your life, from your relationships with family members to your interactions at work to get a fully rounded view of your challenges. We can also involve loved ones in your therapy sessions to help you rebuild relationships that may have broken down during active addiction.
Deriving from the Greek root word ‘holos’, which translates as ‘whole’, holistic therapy refers to healthcare practices that treat the entire person and not just the symptoms. Holistic therapy in addiction means we focus on all aspects of health and well-being: physical, emotional and psychological. Even though the symptoms of addiction are similar, the way it affects each person is unique. At Delamere, we use a combination of therapeutic, somatic and healing practices to offer a fully rounded holistic therapy approach that brings about profound personal transformations.
All our holistic therapists are BACP registered. This means they are core practitioners in either counselling or psychotherapy and you can trust that they work to the highest possible standards. Many of them have overcome problems with addiction and are in active recovery. So they are in the best position to listen to your story with an open mind and non-judgemental approach. They also personally know how hard it can be to overcome addictive behaviours and will be able to guide you in a truly empathic way.
At Delamere, we believe in offering people a combination of both one-to-one therapy and group therapy. While both can be transformative, one-to-one counselling gives us an opportunity to offer a more individualised and person-centric approach. We are firm believers in treating each person’s problems differently, no matter how similar the addiction. Taking the time to listen carefully to your needs in a supportive environment means we can build a better picture of what will work for you and help you have a positive journey of recovery.
Your one-to-one therapist will support your ongoing growth and healing by helping you find healthier ways of living long-term. We understand that when you leave Delamere the hard work must continue to help you remain in active recovery. For this reason, you will have 12 months of continued support and group therapy sessions. You will leave feeling stronger physically, psychologically, emotionally, ready to enjoy your new life free from addiction.
