For many people, the root of their addictive and negative behaviours is trauma-related.

Adverse life events in our early childhood or adult life can impact how we think, behave and respond to life. This may cause someone to seek relief in the form of substances or other behaviours.

But trauma doesn’t just refer to big, memorable events in your life. Trauma can be caused by a whole host of experiences that cause you to see the world differently, and it’s not always obvious where it stems from.

Helping guests make sense of their stories and understand the impact trauma has had on their life so far is a key part of helping them recover and grow. We’re proud of our trauma-informed person-centred approach here at Delamere and believe it’s an important part of long-term recovery.

We can think of trauma in two different ways, ‘small T’ trauma and ‘big T’ trauma.

‘Small T’ trauma

‘Small T’ trauma is caused by a series of ongoing, emotionally distressing situations that exceed our ability to cope or disrupt our emotional functioning. For example:

Bullying
Divorce
Emotional abuse
Ongoing financial concerns
Non-life threatening injuries
Harassment

‘Small T’ trauma is often described as chronic trauma. Experiences like emotional abuse, childhood bullying, and harassment are instances of repeated exposure to emotional distress, which is the very definition of chronic trauma.

This form of trauma is often overlooked as there isn’t always an obvious event to tie it to, which in turn, can lead to feelings of confusion, guilt and shame.

Here at Delamere we’re big believers that addiction and other behaviours are symptoms of a deeper issue, and it’s our job to help you understand what that is and grow beyond it.

‘Big T’ trauma

‘Big T’ Trauma is often caused by traumatic adverse life events and is associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Events that can cause ‘Big T’ trauma include:

Experiencing violence
Witnessing violence
Living through a natural disaster
Life-threatening events
Witnessing a death
Sexual violence
War

This kind of trauma is also known as acute trauma, meaning trauma that comes from a singular traumatic event, rather than ongoing distress.

Trauma therapy at Delamere

Trauma therapy is an important part of recovery and therefore a big part of our programmes here at Delamere.

With trauma playing such a big role in the way we think, feel and behave – it’s important to understand the impact trauma has had on your life up until now in order to let go of the past and create a brighter future.

Unresolved trauma can make even the most promising of recoveries challenging and quickly lead to relapse.

Through one-to-one trauma counselling and group trauma therapy on our residential rehab programmes, we help you make sense of your story, work through any unresolved trauma and help you live a life without limits on the outside.

The trauma healing process

Understanding trauma

First, we spend time uncovering what is causing the addictive behaviour. As part of our group therapy programme, we explore a range of different themes, looking at early life events, grief and loss, guilt and shame, as well as emotional coping strategies developed over time.

Addressing trauma

Depending on the readiness of our guests, the next stage involves using evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), as well as some somatic treatments to strengthen coping strategies and reprocess unresolved trauma.

Growing beyond trauma

The final stage in the process focuses on post-traumatic growth. Once we’ve addressed their trauma, we help guests find meaning and valuable lessons in their journey where possible to reclaim the areas of life it impacted.

Somatic experiencing to heal trauma

Although talk therapy is a great way of understanding your past and building self-awareness, somatic work often helps unlock trauma in profound ways, making it easier to understand and work through.

We hold a lot of stress, tension and emotion in our bodies without realising it. Working with the body helps you understand your past, emotional responses, coping mechanisms and more in a way that talking alone cannot.

At Delamere, we offer a range of somatic practices led by expert practitioners to help you unlock whatever has been holding you back.
