Introduction

Compulsive use of pornography and other sexually compulsive behaviour – like any addictive process – often thrives in shame and secrecy.

Many suffering with pornography addiction often have other addictions, and reaching out for help isn’t always easy. But acknowledging the problem and reaching out for help is the first positive step towards self healing.

Trauma and addiction are often inextricably linked. The behaviour driving the addiction, whether it be drinking, using cocaine or acting out sexually – is simply a symptom of something else on a deeper, often subconscious level.

At Delamere, we help guests uncover the cause of their behaviour through therapy, creative activities and somatic work to create truly powerful personal transformations and lasting changes in their lives.

What is pornography addiction?

Pornography addiction is defined as an individual compulsively accessing and viewing pornographic material and a lack of control over their porn-viewing behaviours.

An addiction to pornography is what is known as a behavioural addiction. Although these aren’t typically as harmful as some substance addictions – they should be treated with the utmost seriousness.

Pornographic content is easier to access today than ever before, creating a surge in people watching porn online. Whilst watching pornography is not necessarily an unhealthy behaviour, when it becomes excessive or has a negative impact on your life and ability to function – this might be a sign that your viewing habits have become a problem.

If you think you’re suffering from porn addiction or know someone who is, contact our team today and learn more about the different programmes we offer here at Delamere.

Signs and symptoms of pornography addiction

With watching pornography being a naturally private activity, it can be difficult to spot an addiction in someone close to you. And knowing whether your porn-watching habits are becoming obsessive and destructive can be difficult to gauge too.

Two of the four clinical associations with behavioural addiction can apply when determining whether your porn consumption might be creeping into unhealthy territory:

Social problems – You’re missing major deadlines or obligations at home, work, or school because of the behaviour

Impaired control – You don’t just crave the behaviour, but you’re also unsuccessful in your attempts to cut down or control it

Some signs to look out for in yourself include:

You want more and feel like you can’t stop
A feeling that your behaviour is out of control
You frequently lose track of time when watching porn
Your mind is constantly thinking about porn
You feel depressed, guilty or ashamed of your viewing habits
You’ve lost attraction and can’t find fulfilment in physical intimacy
You’re spending excessive money on pornographic content
You’re distracted in other areas of your life
A tendency to spend more and more time planning and seeking porn
Dramatic mood swings linked to repeated porn viewing

Some signs to look out for in others include:

Becoming more distant and not wanting to socialise as often
Seeming on edge, anxious or distracted
Becoming more secretive and defensive about things
Wanting to spend more and more time alone
A decrease in health and wellbeing
Frequent mood swings

Effects of pornography addiction

If left untreated, porn addiction can have some serious impacts on someone’s life and can often lead to other forms of addiction, like substance abuse.

An unhealthy addiction to porn can create distance in your relationships, lower self-esteem, lower sexual satisfaction and cause anxiety or depression.

Pornography addiction can also lead to:

Difficulty with true intimacy
People around you feeling neglected
Physical pain due to excessive screen time
Unhealthy ideas of beauty and sex
Turning to substances to deal with guilt or shame
Suicide due to guilt or shame
Divorce

The Delamere approach to Porn addiction

Set in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, Delamere offers a peaceful space to work through your addiction with the support of our dedicated team of doctors, nurses, counsellors, psychotherapists and holistic practitioners.

We believe in a more holistic approach to recovery, focusing on treating the whole person – not just the problem or symptom.

Through one-to-one, group and creative therapies as well as around the clock support from the team, you’ll identify the cause of your addiction and gain the tools needed to live a full, happy life without it on the outside.

For sex, love and porn addictions, we recommend a minimum 4-week inpatient stay to both heal the past and ensure new, healthy behaviours are established. It takes time to adjust to a new way of living, so we ensure ample time to get you in a place where you feel comfortable to integrate back into your day-to-day life.

Our programmes allow patients to focus on getting to a more balanced, healthy place in their lives without the distractions and temptations they’re used to – bringing about profound transformations.
